Critter Tailz Fun Fact: The Hippopotamus is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa. After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal. Despite looking similar to pigs, the hippo's closest living relatives are whales, dolphins and porpoises. Baby hippos are born underwater at a weight between 55 and 110 lb. (25 and 50 kg) and an average length of around 4.17 ft (127 cm), and must swim to the surface to take their first breaths.
